Proof of Stake (PoS) consensus is a cryptocurrency validation mechanism that confirms the validity of transactions on a blockchain and facilitates the creation of new blocks to be added to the blockchain. With distributed blockchain technology, a need exists to ensure that new entries to the distributed ledger are legitimate. Proof of Stake is one of many different consensus mechanisms that have been created or used since the advent of cryptocurrency in 2009 to ensure the integrity of distributed ledgers.

Compared to Proof of Work, Proof of Stake requires much less computational power. Whereas Proof of Work requires validator nodes on the network to show that they have performed computations, solving mathematical problems, before they are allowed to participate in efficient consensus method than Proof of Work.

      Proof of Work (or PoW) is a method used to verify that some computational work has been done as a way to filter out users attempting to participate in a network in a way that would be antagonistic. The concepts upon which the modern Proof of Work consensus is built came about in 1993 to stop bad actors, who are dissuaded from bad behavior when sufficient "skin in the game" is required. The inventors of the concepts used in what eventually became referred to as Proof of Work used the method to prevent distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks and email spam.

      Proof of Work requires the participant to demonstrate that a sufficient amount of computational effort has been expended, as opposed to demanding some other form of contribution, such as a monetary payment. The goal of Proof of Work mechanisms is to make it unproductive for any antagonist users on a network while not making the service prohibitive to legitimate users.

      Prover's Work Versus Verifier's Work

      The work done by the entity (the prover or requester) submitting its proof of work is much greater than what is necessary to be done by the entity that verifies the work has been done.

      In 2008, the Proof of Work mechanism was adopted by the entity (one or more software developers using the pseudonym Satoshi Nakamoto) that created Bitcoin as a way to secure its distributed payment network. Bitcoin requires that nodes on its network expend time and energy guessing a randomly generated number. The first one to guess the correct answer is given the privilege of adding new transactions that comprise a new block to the Bitcoin blockchain.

      This article is designed to help you become more familiar with the Stellar payment network, and to help you become more educated about principles associated with cryptocurrency.

      In this article, I'm going to describe how assets and anchors are handled on the Stellar network.

      What is the Stellar Network?

      The Stellar network is a system of computer nodes running an open source protocol that allows users to trade various forms of money. Stellar can be used to store assets as well as to trade them, including fiat currencies (currencies not backed by collateral, such as gold or another precious metal) such as USD and EUR, cryptocurrencies, stocks, precious metals, and other things that have value.

      Whereas other digital asset protocols make use of smart contracts, in the Stellar network, the asset concept is programmatically included in the software itself. Because Stellar uses this approach of integrating assets within the logic of the software itself, representing assets is more streamlined with Stellar.

      Stellar's 3 Types of Assets

      Stellar represents assets on its payment network in three different formats: lumens, non-anchored assets, and anchored assets.

      Lumens (abbreviated XLM on trading platforms such as Coinbase) comprise the native, built-in currency of the Stellar network. The lumen asset type was created as a barrier for spam, making it more difficult for people to abuse the Stellar network by essentially requiring some transaction commitment through fees for accessing the network.

      Besides being a currency themselves, lumens act as an asset bridge, forming a currency interface between other assets that exist on the Stellar network. Other assets can be converted into Lumens, which can then be converted into other assets involved in a trade.

      Non-anchored assets originate on the Stellar network. They don't have a connection with assets that reside outside of the Stellar network. Examples of non-anchored assets include initial coin offering (ICO) tokens such as those created using the ERC-20 standard.

      Non-anchored assets are also referred to as non-collateralized or non-redeemable, referring to their utility only within the Stellar network and not connected to assets outside the network.

      Anchored assets are connected to the Stellar network by anchoring entities, or simply anchors. Anchored assets are also referred to as collateralized, redeemable, or tethered assets, terms that infer that the physical asset lives outside of the Stellar network.

      Stellar Anchors

      The use of anchors in the Stellar network facilitate the ability to trade assets that originate outside the Stellar network within the network with very little friction, and with high efficiency.

      Stellar anchors act similar to cash deposits at banking institutions in that you can deposit an asset to a Stellar anchor and have that asset credited to your specific account, with the results of the deposit visible through a wallet app or ledger explorer. Just like you would at a bank, you can later withdraw your deposit.

      Anchors act as a bridge between outside currencies and the Stellar network.

      The ability to have assets anchored to the Stellar network provide a tremendous amount of flexibility to the network and ultimately help give the network usefulness for its intended purpose: to facilitate holding and transferring assets, in whichever world they live - digital or physical.

      The Stellar payment network is an open source protocol that allows users to store and transfer money, including fiat currencies and crypto currencies. Stellar was created to enable people using the many disparate financial systems throughout the world to exchange monetary value using the same efficient payment network.

      The Stellar Development Foundation

      The Stellar Development Foundation (or SDF) is the non-profit organization behind the Stellar Payment Network. The foundation is headquartered in San Francisco, California, and was founded in 2014 to support the development and growth of the Stellar payment network and of the Stellar Lumens (or XLM), which is the native currency built in to the Stellar network.

      SDF received its initial funding from Stripe, the payment processing company with whom it collaborated to create the Stellar open network. Stripe gave SDF $3 million in exchange for 2 billion lumens.

      The Stellar Development Foundation established and continues to maintain the Stellar network codebase, which is kept in a GitHub repository. After the total supply of lumens was adjusted to its current volume of 50 billion in 2010, the Stellar foundation kept nearly 30 billion lumens of the total supply to use for continued development and growth of the network.

      SDF employs a staff of about 130 personnel, including developers and other technical employees as well as product managers, account managers, marketers, and other roles that support the mission of the growing the use of Stellar worldwide.

      Stellar Lumens (XLM)

      Stellar lumens are built-in tokens of the Stellar payment network. Stellar lumens are abbreviated as XLM on the exchanges (such as Binance, Coinbase, Kraken) where they are traded.

      Stellar created the lumens currency as a way to create a cost barrier to users of the Stellar payment network, with the intent to reduce or eliminate spam and other misuses of the Stellar node system. Accounts that access the Stellar network must have a minimum of 1 lumen, and they pay a transaction (for buying or selling lumens) of 0.0001 lumen.

      The existence of Stellar lumens as a native currency on the Stellar payment network is convenient, as lumens serve as an exchange medium and facilitates the movement of money, even from currencies that would be otherwise difficult to exchange, between a wide range of payment representations, including fiat an crypto.

      When the Stellar Development Foundation first introduced their lumens currency in 2014, the original supply was 100 billion.       It is inevitable that the ISO 20022 standard and the concepts that underlie it will have increasing impact on how the world makes financial transactions.

      In 2023, there are 6 cryptocurrencies (financial networks or protocols) that are already compliant with the ISO 20022 standard, making them integral parts of the developing interledger ecosystem. Others will likely come on board, but it's important to know which cryptocurrencies are already in the mix.

      Here they are...

      XRP

      XRP is a digital asset built on the Ripple Network. It was created by Ripple Labs in 2012, designed to provide a fast and secure way of sending and receiving money across borders. It is based on a decentralized ledger system, which allows for secure transactions without the need for intermediaries such as banks.

      Ripple was the first crypto network to be included on the ISO 20022 standards board, leading the way for standardizing distributed ledger technology worldwide.

      XRP's compliance with ISO 20022 means that it can seamlessly integrate with other financial systems and networks, allowing for faster and more efficient transfers of funds. It also means that XRP transactions are standardized and can be easily tracked and audited, providing greater transparency and security for users.

      XLM

      XLM is built on the Stellar Network, which is also part of the ISO 20022 standards body.

      XLM, or Stellar Lumens, is a decentralized blockchain network and digital currency designed to facilitate cross-border payments and exchanges. It was created in 2014 by Jed McCaleb, who was also a co-founder of Ripple.

      Like XRP, XLM also complies with the ISO 20022 standard, which enables it to easily integrate with existing financial systems and networks. This compliance means that XLM transactions are standardized and can be easily tracked and audited, providing greater transparency and security for users.

      The major differences between XRP and XLM have to do with their goals and target markets. While XRP primarily focuses on providing fast and efficient payments for financial institutions, XLM aims to provide financial services to individuals and underbanked populations in developing countries.

      XDC

      XDC (XinFin Digital Contract) is associated with the XinFin technology. It is a hybrid blockchain platform that is designed to bridge the gap between traditional finance and blockchain technology. It aims to provide a secure and efficient platform for trade and finance, with a particular focus on supporting cross-border transactions.

      XDC has several features that make it well-suited for international trade and finance. Most important of these it its use of a consensus mechanism that combines both proof of stake and proof of work, which enables fast and efficient transaction processing while maintaining security and decentralization.

      IOTA

      The IOTA network is a distributed ledger built for the Internet of Things (IoT), allowing humans and machines to interact economically to transfer data and value without friction. IOTA's distributed network is called Tangle, which is a directed acyclic graph (DAG) that enables feeless and near-instant transactions.

      Unlike traditional blockchain-based cryptocurrencies, IOTA does not use miners or blocks, and transactions are confirmed by other transactions in the network. This makes IOTA more scalable and energy-efficient compared to other cryptocurrencies.

      IOTA's main use case is for the machine-to-machine (M2M) economy, where devices and machines can transact with each other autonomously without the need for human intervention. It aims to provide a secure and scalable platform for IoT devices to communicate and transact with each other without relying on centralized intermediaries.

      ALGO

      USDC

      USDC (USD Coin) is a stablecoin that is pegged to the US dollar on a 1:1 ratio. It was launched in 2018 as a joint venture between Circle and Coinbase, and it operates on the Ethereum blockchain as an ERC-20 token.

      USDC is designed to provide a stable and secure digital asset that can be used for transactions, trading, and other financial activities on blockchain networks. Its value is backed by reserves of US dollars held in bank accounts that are regularly audited by third-party firms to ensure transparency and compliance.

      The Centre Consortium, which is the organization that oversees USDC, has been working to bring the token into compliance with ISO 20022.

      Why ISO 20022 Compliance Matters for Crypto

      ISO 20022 compliance is important for cryptocurrencies because it provides a standardized format for exchanging electronic data between financial institutions and systems. This means that cryptocurrencies that are ISO 20022 compliant can more easily integrate with traditional financial systems, which could increase their adoption and use in traditional finance.

      Venmo has come a long way since 2009, when it was originally launched as a payment system that did simple things like helping friends split dinner bills. Venmo now processes hundreds of billions of dollars in payments annually.

      Buying Cryptocurrency Through Venmo

      Venmo's has created a streamlined process for buying cryptocurrency compared to other crypto exchanges and wallets, many of which can be cumbersome to verify identity and to fund accounts using outside sources.

      When buying cryptocurrency through Venmo, you'll need to provide identity credentials. Venmo is making its cryptocurrency trading features available to a limited number of users at first, then rolling it out to a wider audience, likely after it gets more experience with the potential pitfalls of allowing users to trade cryptocurrency.

      To buy one of the four crypto coins available through Venmo, you'll need to do the following:

      1. open the Venmo app and select the "Crypto" option from the menu
      2. choose the crypto flavor you want and make a crypto purchase, using as little as $1
      3. agree to the "Venmo Cryptocurrencies Terms and Conditions"
      4. verify your identity to Venmo, which includes providing your legal first name, legal last name, date of birth, last four digits of your social security number, and your current street address; it's possible (likely) that Venmo will also ask for a valid identification, such as a driver license.

      Selling Cryptocurrency on Venmo

      Selling your cryptocurrency through the Venmo app is fairly easy. It's a similar process to buying, except in the opposite direction. You can sell your Venmo held cryptocurrency in exchange for one of the other three coins available through Venmo, or turn it into cash.

      The Stellar network is used to facilitate trading cryptocurrency by providing an open-source protocol that allows its users to make trades between digital currencies and traditional payment currencies (such as US dollars or Euros). The Stellar payment network allows users to store and transfer money without limitation, essentially existing as a resource for financial systems throughout the world to operate on its network.

      In addition to being a ubiquitous storage and transfer system for digital and fiat currencies throughout the world, Stellar also has its own currency token, called a lumen, that can be traded through various tokens that are built using the Stellar protocol.

      Stellar's unique blockchain implementation is more efficient and more powerful than other cryptocurrency blockchains, including the one used by Bitcoin, currently the largest and more widely used cryptocurrency.

      To learn more about how the Stellar payment network functions, we will take a look at the details of the concepts used by the Stellar protocol.       What is the Stellar Network?

      The Stellar protocol and payment network was invented to solve the problem of exchanging money, which often involves friction and overhead, especially when the money is being stored in separate banking institutions. The money exchange problem gets even worse when more than one currency is involved.

      Explaining the purpose of the Stellar network can be done using a comparison to messaging between people, which is analogous to money exchange. Just as the Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) was created to send messages through the internet, Stellar created a protocol that allows money to be exchanged between people throughout the world without the overhead and inefficiencies that currently exist with many of the methods for sending money, especially when a currency change is involved.

      Although it solve a similar problem, Stellar's approach to money is naturally much more sophisticated than SMTP. The Stellar network protocol has to solve three different problems that exist with trading money:

      1. Digitally representing all currencies and other assets in their native forms
      2. Create a way to make all of these currencies and assets interchangeable, regardless of which digital or fiat currencies are being used
      3. Prevent double-spending, which is the ability to send the same chunk of money more than once.

      Stellar has created a 3-layered protocol to solve these three problems.

      To solve these three primary problems, Stellar provides a three-layered protocol that involves:

      1. anchors for representing an asset; the anchors are tokenized to exist on the Stellar network
      2. a built-in decentralized exchange (DEX) for matching up offers to sell with offers to buy
      3. Stellar's consensus mechanism - Stellar Consensus Protocol - provides a more efficient alternative to Bitcoin's proof of work
